James Song is a multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin, Germany. Born in 1996 in Bath, England, to Chinese immigrant parents, Song initially pursued a career in finance before fully immersing in the art world. His diverse practice is driven by an obsession with celebrating the energies of others and exploring the tension technology brings to our interpersonal relationships. It encompasses paper and canvas work, tattooing, installations, performances, and poetry.
Throughout his career, Song has lived and worked in the UK, Germany, China, and Brazil. His work, a synthesis of these global influences, has been exhibited across Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Athens, and New York. A recent milestone commission for Casa De Las Artes, part of the prestigious Melia Collection in Madrid, earned recognition in Vogue Spain, further cementing his presence in the contemporary art scene.
Song draws constant inspiration from our collective lived experience. Passionate about elevating others and celebrating their stories and energies, Song creates energetic and immediate artworks that offer audiences an intimate glimpse into their subjects' vitality.
A deep fascination with people has always been at the core of Song’s artistic practice. From early explorations in portraiture to studies of the human form, and now a focus on movement, his work continually revolves around "the other." The human form serves as an endless source of inspiration—an expressive reservoir of emotion and identity.
In addition to celebrating human energy, Song’s work explores the tension technology introduces into interpersonal relationships. As digital interactions increasingly mediate human connection, their practice seeks to reclaim the immediacy and authenticity of physical expression.
The creative process itself provides an escape from overthinking and control. With a fast-moving and spontaneous mind, Song finds freedom in painting and drawing—allowing intuition to guide the work. Using ink and loose, gestural marks, they surrender to the moment, embracing fluidity and liberation through artistic expression.
